Smart Capture (Partial Submissions): Setup and Responsible Use

What Smart Capture Does

Smart Capture records meaningful contact information while a visitor types, even if they leave before submitting the full form.

Current behavior:

• Captures after about 2 seconds of inactivity
• Uses debounced, secure transmission
• Requires a phone number or email before treating the record as meaningful
• Can include custom field answers entered before abandonment

Smart Capture is an abandonment-recovery tool. A partial record is not the same as a completed form submission.

Enable Smart Capture

Quick path: Widgets → select widget → Leads → Smart Capture

1. Turn Smart Capture on.
2. Save the widget.
3. Open the live/preview widget.
4. Enter an email or phone, wait at least two seconds, then leave without submitting.
5. Open Smart Capture from the sidebar to verify the partial record.

If no widget is enabled, the Smart Capture page shows No Smart Capture Enabled and links you back to widget settings.

Review and Export Partial Leads

Open Smart Capture to:

• Choose a widget/timeframe
• Review recent partial submissions
• Compare partial vs completed activity
• Click Export CSV when you need an internal export

Access can depend on the team member's portal permissions and an active SmartForm Subscription.

Responsible Use

Important: A visitor typing information and leaving is not proof that they clicked Submit or consented to every marketing channel.

Before using partial data:

• Clearly disclose collection in your privacy notice/form experience
• Use the data only for purposes your business has disclosed
• Obtain the consent required for email, SMS, calls, and advertising
• Honor opt-outs/suppression lists
• Apply appropriate access and retention controls

Do not automatically enroll a partial lead into SMS/calling campaigns merely because a phone number was typed.

Troubleshooting

Nothing appears after abandoning the form

Confirm Smart Capture is enabled for that widget, enter a phone or email, wait at least two seconds, and test the published/live widget.

The Smart Capture page is empty

Select the correct widget/timeframe and verify your portal permission includes Smart Capture.

A partial record later becomes a full lead

Use the completed submission as the authoritative record. Avoid sending duplicate follow-up from both paths.
